Standardising Astronomy Outreach Practices at Research Institutions

The public interest in astronomy is closely intertwined with cultural connections and the curiosity of ‘wonder and awe’ of humans. Studies show that astronomers develop an interest in astronomy at a younger age and are willing to engage with the public [Dang 2015]. However, the availability of funding and resources for outreach remains low, while those researchers engaged in outreach are not recognised. How and why should research institutions needs to position themselves to communicate with the public effectively? What benefits do researchers gain from doing so? There is a need to standardise astronomy outreach at the academic level. This talk will showcase some examples of evidence-based outreach, communication practices, and synergy between research and outreach.
