Stellar dynamos in late type stars generate strong magnetic fields, which manifest in observable signatures, such as starspots or flares. Differential rotation has a crucial role in the generation of the large scale toroidal fields, hence understanding it is of utmost importance in the study of magnetic activity and stellar dynamos. In this talk, I aim to give an overview of the current state of the art, based on results by our group and others, from the last two decades.
