Doppler imaging is the state of the art inversion technique for investigating stellar surface structure. After giving a brief summary of its basics, recent applications will be shown, demonstrating the advantages of having high-resolution time-series spectroscopic data. With this, the first interferometric images of the spotted surface of zeta Andromedae are presented and discussed.
