| Type Ia supernovae are among the most popular objects in astropysics, mainly because of the essential role they play in measuring cosmological distances. It is known for more than 50 years that they are thermonuclear explosions of white dwarfs. However, essential details on the physics of the explosion and the nature of the progenitor are still debated. In this talk I briefly review the open questions and show some recent attempts on how to test the concurrent hypotheses with the ultimate solution: the observations. |
